Rangers fans would relish the opportunity for a glamour overseas trip

Rangers are weighing up an invitation to play a glamour friendly against Oliver Burke's RB Leipzig during the January break.

The return of the SPFL winter lay-off will see the Ibrox club out of action for three weeks following the Hogmanay clash with Celtic.

And, following the collapse of plans to head for Florida, manager Mark Warburton is considering an offer to fly to Germany to line up against Scotland's £15million winger Burke and the team who are taking the Bundesliga by storm.

After a few rumours on FF the Mail seems to think it is genuine stuff.

Newly promoted in the summer, big-spending Leipzig's 2-0 win over SV Darmstadt on Saturday kept them in second place in the German top flight, just two points behind champions Bayern Munich.

Rangers supporters, meanwhile, would relish the opportunity for a glamour overseas trip in anticipation of a potential return to European action next season.

Ibrox boss Warburton has already expressed reservations over the impact that a three week January break might have on his side's fitness before a fourth-round Scottish Cup tie on the weekend of January 21-22.

'Three weeks is very difficult,' said the Englishman, 'but we'll allow the players five days off and we will try and find somewhere decent to travel to without too much expense hopefully.

'We'll also need to try to find a game to play.'

Bundesliga clubs begin their winter break before Christmas, and they return to action the same weekend as Scottish clubs.

RB Leipzig on transfermarkt -> http://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/rasenballsport-leipzig/startseite/verein/23826 (squad value about 1/6 of Bayern and 1/3 of Dortmund)

RB Leipzig on wikipedia -> https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RB_Leipzig

Despite the name, they are sponsored by Red Bull and rose from the fifth' tier of German football up to the top, after being founded only in 2009. Because of their big-money backing (essentially outspending their way from the fifth to the second tier) they are one of the "more disliked" clubs in Germany these days. A bit like Hoffenheim a few years back.

At the end of the day, they assembled a decent enough, young and talented squad (see value above) of many no-names (sorry, Mr. Burke ain't no big name just yet) and some good pros. Their manager made them click, they navigated the difficult BL 2 and are now second in the BL, which took many by surprise.

But we shall see if that one actually comes off.

Only 160k for you DB nice day out.

Too far for me I would be easier jumping on a plane to Ibrox and visiting the family.

As bad as that? Suppose they are hated because they have no tradition, an artificial club if you like.

Most likely. And they managed to buy themselves out of the 5th tier up to the first, outspending most other clubs, even though there were some familiar faces along the way, e.g. Kaiserslautern. They do sell out their 42k stadium, play some attractive football and are not exactly littered with any big names. As opposed to e.g. Bayern in the German basketball league, who whipped up a team buying the best of all the (at the time) current best players and have set the tone since. It does help when you have a Hoeneß guy liking basketball and being one of the high-ups at the football section.

Hoffenheim is a similar case, backed by a millionaire but are essentially a suburb club with no following worth mentioning. They marched through the leagues too, had a fine season in the BL and then the big clubs circled and snatched their best players. Now they are mid-table stuff living on the good-will of their owner.

Obviously, Leipzig (despite being rather young) is some light for the East German* football world, as the rest lingers on in BL 2, 3 or below that, with a determined following but next to no money or financial backing. Understandably, they do not exactly like the newcomers, but on the whole they put a new East German city on the BL map.

*Hertha Berlin essentially is a "West-Berlin" i.e. "West-German" team, even though the last couple of generations of fans obviously hail from this region of Germany too.

Jealousy I expect and maybe a bit of bias against teams from the former GDR. In some ways they're no more of an artificial entity than Chelsea and Man City who were bankrolled to prominence by billionaires without which they would be at nothing like the level they currently are.

Man City no title wins since 1968 before billionaire bankrolling while Chelsea had none since 1955 before Abramovich.
